U.S. HealthWorks Doctor Wins Coveted Award
U.S. HealthWorks Doctor Wins Coveted Award

U.S. HealthWorks Dr. Anuruddh Kumar Misra was recently recognized as a Choosing Wisely (CW) Champion by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

This was the first time a CW Champion was awarded for sports medicine, which is Dr. Misra’s sub-specialty.

In this brief Q&A below, we look at the award, what it means, and its significance.

Dr. Misra is a double-board certified doctor in sports and internal medicine. He recently served as Medical Director for U.S. HealthWorks for three years.

Q: What is the Choosing Wisely campaign all about?

A: Choosing Wisely is an initiative of the ABIM Foundation in partnership with Consumer Reports, whose purpose is to advance a meaningful discussion with patients to redress the inappropriate and incorrect ordering of wasteful/unnecessary medical tests, treatments, and interventions/procedures.

In more broad strokes, CW is a comprehensive effort to advance best evidence-based practices for patient care across all sub-specialties of medical practice. There are numerous patient educational materials in PDF format available online from CW to aide and educate both health care professionals and patients in this process.

Q: Why was Dr. Misra chosen for this award?

A: U.S. HealthWorks clinics are high-volume medical centers where a myriad of medical decisions are made due to the nature of the practice – Occupational Medicine and Urgent Care.

Nearly every specialty of the practice of medicine is routinely engaged, ranging from general internal medicine to orthopedic care, ENT, dermatology, and even gynecology. Patients come with a series of serious questions and concerns, so it is important to be able to provide credible answers, which is where Dr. Misra found CW especially useful. CW helped him better communicate the expectations patients should have about their care, such as when advanced imaging ( MRI and CT scans) or antimicrobials/antibiotics are needed.

Dr. Misra regularly used CW in real-time patient care. Further, he referenced CW in the U.S. HealthWorks blog posts he authored on topical issues in the world of medicine, such as the opioid crisis that’s often highlighted in the news.
